Internship Opportunity for Summer 2017

March 10, 2017

The Syracuse Metropolitan Transportation Council is looking for interested applicants for a paid summer internship opportunity. The internship is related to transportation planning, with a focus on data collection. Up to two interns may be hired for this position. The primary task for the intern(s) will be to conduct a survey of Centro bus riders. Intern(s) will be expected to ride Centro buses (bus passes will be provided) during various periods between 6:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. and ask riders to complete a short survey while on the bus. The intern(s) will collect the surveys while on the bus, and will be responsible for data entry upon returning to the SMTC office. This position may also include other field work and data collection, such as vehicular traffic counts, pedestrian counts, or review and documentation of existing transportation or land use conditions.

Requirements and Responsibilities:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, particularly a willingness and ability to initiate conversations with bus riders in a respectful and professional manner
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Access
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work as part of a research team
  • Due to the expected substantial field work requirement, access to a reliable vehicle and a valid driver’s license required (all incurred mileage will be reimbursed).

This internship pays approximately $15/hour (DOQ) for a maximum of 37 hours a week. Applicants should be aware that some data collection will take place in the early morning (6-9 a.m.) and late afternoon (4-6 p.m.) and interns will be expected to have a reasonable amount of flexibility with scheduling. Opportunities to complete the required work within a “compressed” work week (i.e. 4 days per week) may be discussed.

The SMTC is flexible in terms of start and end date of the internship depending on the chosen candidate’s needs.

Interested applicants may send a resume to:
